One casino game that feels heads-up is roulette. I cannot tell you how many times I have played the game with the though that my real opponent was not the casino, or fate, but that damn roulette dealer. I could be hanging with my party poker crew at a given casino, whooping it up, but park me in front of the roulette table, even with my buds, and its just me and that damn roulette dealer.

It seems that it doesn't matter which roulette strategie I choose. In the end, my fun really depends on how I interact with the casino staff at the game. Whether I'm sticking to my usual numbers or using a different roulette system, like doubling my Black bet until it finally hits, if the staff is giving me the eye or is not willing to play along with the tomfoolery, the game can grind to a halt.

Get me a good dealer, though, and any outcome can be met with joy. I guess it just goes to show you that its not just the game, but the people in the game that help make it fun.

Repair Pal

Man, I know nothing about cars. I mean, nothing. I can drive well, and I can pump gas, but if you want me to do any significant work on an actual vehicle, well, you are out of luck.

I stumbled upon a website recently, though, that might solve that problem. Let's say you are out of town and have some car problems. How the hell are you supposed to find a reputable auto shop? That's where Repair Pal comes in.

Social Networking & Poker

If there was ever a reason for a Heads-Up Challenge, it has always come down to one thing: the social aspect. Sure, the point of the game is to compete and win against, in our case, fellow poker bloggers, but the money is just one aspect of the game. I have always felt that among the online poker playing world, bloggers are generally better than your average mouth-breather. Even if bloggers as a whole are not rocking the highest buy-ins, at our buy-ins, we are better than the rest because we think about the game and process it whenever we write.

So, for me, the purpose of a HU Challenge is to mix with your fellow bloggers. With the extension of social networking programs out there, a new HU could incorporate some fun ideas, like Twitter updates alerting the rest of the competitors that one of the HU matches was about to take place, in case they want to watch. Or facebook contacts so that we can all easily share updates amongst the group.

Even beyond the HUCs, though, social networking and poker seem to go hand in hand. Probably 75% of the Twitter feeds that I follow are for poker players or poker sites like my most recent addition, 888 Twitter.

Even face-to-face social networking seems to be largely poker-based for me. Just this last week, I met up with Toronto blogger Astin and CardRunner employee and blogger LJ for dinner in town. Just speaking to the crew helped me process more about the game. When I first got into poker, I would talk about it at work, but when I realized no one knew a thing about poker (or cared) I started my poker blog as a way to socialize and network around poker. So, even if you can't find like-minded people in your 'hood, you can always go online and find a poker community, like the poker bloggers or websites like the 888 poker community.

Amazingly, poker benefits from socialization, and at least for me, socialization benefits from poker. It's no surprise, then, that social networking and poker go hand-in-hand.

Heads Up Challenge 7?

Hey ho, folks. It's been a while since the Heads Up Challenge has been active. The huge staff here at Heads Up Challenge central have been fairly dormant, returned to their deprivation chambers until needed, but with the recent flurry of pokery activity out there, it is no surprise that the crew is growing restless.

If we were to start a 7th Heads Up Challenge, there are a lot of different variables to consider. The upcoming Battle of the Bloggers Tournament 5 is a huge hurtle, which will likely require that any HUC be either rushed before BBT5 starts (not an appealing idea) or postponed until it is complete (also not appealing, but the better option of the two). But I suppose we need the BBT5 announcement before we can figure that information out.

The other question is which format to use for the Heads Up Challenge 7. In the past, we had arranged for players to be set up in brackets, after which the brackets would find their own time to complete the games. This worked fairly well, except for the few slowpokes and the natural issues that come with timing out entry into a Heads Up tournament. Lo, I miss the days of Ultimate Bet when I could challenge someone specifically to a Heads Up match. I haven't been to UB since the scandal, but I'd consider going back if enough people were interested.

The other possibility is a simple one-time HU tournament. It would certainly be easier, but there is something about the slow burn of a bracket done over a week or more.

How to become a better cash game player

Playing poker cash games can be intimidating at first, but you’ll get into the swing of things.

These poker tips will help you to improve your cash game performance:

1.Play tight – in poker tournaments, you can’t wait forever for the right hand, the increasing blinds will eventually kill you. In a cash game, the blinds are always the same and you have the option to re-buy, so why take risks?

2.Don’t sit down short stacked – make sure your buy-in is at least 100x the big blind. You want some room to manoeuvre, otherwise you’ll end up with just two choices – all-in, or fold, and that’s not what you want.

3.Learn the odds – you need to know how to calculate the pot odds, and you need to understand implied odds. If you don’t understand these things, you’re missing out on the information you need to make good decisions. Spend some time learning those skills now.

4.Betting to manipulate – betting is more than just changing the size of the pot. The size of your bet alters how the other players at the table think. Think about what you’re aiming for with your bets. Are you trying to make another player fold? Narrow the field? Build the pot? You can force players to make bad decisions simply by changing how you bet.

5.Observe the field – when you sit down at the table, don’t post your big blind right away. Take a little while to watch the other players. Identify their styles and plan your poker strategy before you start playing.

6.Be picky – if you have a choice of where to sit, use it. Ideally you want aggressive players to your right and passive to your left. If you have the chance to choose, take it.

HUC 6 is coming!!!!

Somehow, I got cleverly manipulated into doing this but anyways, even though I'm a schlub who actually has a real job and such, I am now the commissioner for HUC 6. Last time, we got 16 players to come out but I think there was some confusion as to which site you had to play on and such. There are no such rules. It's whatever the two players who are going heads up want to do. Hell, if they want to play it live, go at it for all I care. Just tell me who won so I can update the spreadsheet.

Number of Players: 32* (first pay, first served)

Entry Fee: $30 (paid in advance to RecessRampage at FullTilt (city name starts with G)) - Let me know if you only have money in other sites. We can work something out.

Places Paid: 4 (1st thru 4th will be paid $432, $288, $144 and $96, respectively) - assuming 32 players, of course.

Structure: Preliminary rounds will be best of 3 and Final 4 will be best of 5

Organization: Players will have 5 days per round to organize and complete their match - the winner will give me the match results. Also, the buy-in for the HU games should cater to the ones with smaller bankrolls. If you wanna play a $100 HU game but the other guy can only afford $5, don't try to "negotiate" into doing $20. Since this is an attempt at making it fun but a test of skill, I don't want anyone to have to play with scared money.

* Last time, we tried for 32 but only got 16. It was Fuel that was trying to get people... He has no friends... wait, maybe that means I can only get like 8 people???

Oh, it's time, ladies and gentlemen, for a battle of wits and determination. A spectacle like none before it (except for HUC and HUC2 and thanks to WillWonka's reminder, the HUC3). The Greatest Show on Earth (after Barnum & Bailey's Circus). The face that launched a thousand ships (which is complete rip off of Cleopatra and really makes no sense here).

Heads Up Challenge...4!

I am now taking submissions for entries into the HUC4. To apply, please send an email to highonpokr AT yahoo DOT compadre, and don't forget to leave off the last E in highonpokr for +EV! Please include your Full Tilt screenname, your blog address (if you have one), your location (and time zone if it is not obvious...I'm looking at you mid-westerners), your Yahoo IM name (if you have it), and your email address. Entry will cost $25, which will be used entirely for the prize pool, and must be paid via Full Tilt or PokerStars. Payment should only be made after I have approved your entry.

Initially, the tournament will consist of 16 players. However, depending upon interest, the tournament will expand to 24 or 32 players. If it is expanded to 24, three brackets will be used and the three bracket winners will participate in a round-robin final. Each round will consist of a minimum of 3 matches, all on Full Tilt costing $5.50, unless the individual competitors decide otherwise. Each match must be No Limit Hold'em. This cannot be changed.

Once brackets are made, individual match-ups will be able to determine the time and date of their matches, although there will be a general time/date limit to ensure no undue delays. Players will be encouraged to announce their scheduled match-ups in advance.

The prize money will be determined after completion of the brackets, but at least three spots will pay.

The tournament will hopefully be ready to start following DADI X, on November 16, 2006.

I played the first HUC and had a blast, albeit outmatched. I missed getting into the second HUC by two minutes and six seconds. Once I missed HUC2, I started realizing other things I've missed out on in my life. I've never painted a big ball with polka dots. I've never farted in a hurricane. I've never punched a police person in the mouth. I've never drank enough alcohol to be admitted to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. I've never even urinated off the Eiffel Tower. So since then, I've done every one of those things I mentioned and I'm not feeling so good these days. If I missed the HUC3, I'd be worried I would be reminded of even more fun and exciting activities that I haven't tried. It could kill me. So having the ability to play in HUC3 is saving my life.

Now for the exciting news. I was chatting with the Blogfather yesterday and asked him if there was any chance he would be interested in filling our last HUC3 spot. It was then that I made the discovery that Iggy has never really played in a Heads Up Match. Can you imagine my delight? Iggy is a HU virgin. I mean you don't find that everyday. This was just too good to be true. Before you know it, we had struck up a deal. I realized that we could not waste a HU match with the Blogfather on just any Competitor. So the winner of the HUC3 will get the opportunity to play a Professional Poker Player afterall. As for his cherry, well..that my friends is for me to enjoy. Thats right, you heard me. Veneno is gonna pop Iggy's HU cherry in a best 2 of 3 series of HU matches. We have not set the date or times, but be watching for it.

The winner of the HUC3 will be getting an extra $15 donated by Fairnbalcnd who said to keep his prize money. So this can be used to fund the HU matches with the Blogfather.

Round 1 Information for Competitors..

Whew..I just finished matching everyone up and sending out passwords....

Round 1 matches will all take place Thursday, March 23rd on Full Tilt. Once you have completed your match, the winner needs to send me the results from the match. Then I can post the results on our official Heads Up Challenge site for the World to see!

If you did not receive the information for your match via email, please contact me as soon as possible.

Please register for your match as soon as possible to make sure there are no problems.

For future matches, players will work together arrange for a time to play a best of 3 series. I will provide each player with an email address for your opponent in order to make arrangements.

Once you have selected a date and time, please send it to me to announce the match. If you would like a private table on Full Tilt, I will be glad to set it up. The only requirement is that you try to complete your match within a one week period.

Update for Competitors

Hello Everyone,

I'm sure you are all excited about our upcoming event. It all starts this Thursday on March 23rd.

Most everything is coming together. We have the 32 Competitors. All but 3 have paid their money into the prize fund. And the time slots seem to be coming together.

Aside from the group that will play at 4 p.m. Everyone else for the most part is available for 9 or 10 pm slots. There may have been some confusion because initially I tried to be flexible for all. Sorry, this is my first time coordinating. I think I have learned a few things for next time.

So just to be clear. The time slots are set for either 9 or 10 p.m. EST.

Okay..now for the hiccup..

Apparently Poker Stars does not offer the 4 person HU structure in a private event. WeakPlayer, as an affiliate, tried to get things worked out on that end, but without success. We can still set-up the private games, but the payout will be for top 3 places I think and not just 1st place. (read the email chain below if you are curious).

Not to worry, we are not going to let this get in the way. You will have 2 options. I know, I know..options...I would like to just tell you to pick option #1, but I realize that may not work for all.

Before I get to the options, let me tell you what I did. Once I got the rejection email from Poker Stars, I started to explorer solutions. I shot an email to Full Tilt with the details of the structure for this event. Told them to rush this because we already had a group of poker players ready for this event. This morning I got the response from them that the private tables are all set-up and ready to go. Wow. Awesome. That is the kind of service that I like to see. So if you are willing to switch over to play at Full Tilt. It is ready to go.

If you need a funds transfer, I can do it for a few people. And maybe a few others can swing it.

#1 - Play at Full Tilt at either 9 PM or 10 PM.

#2 - Play at Poker Stars - and if you do not win the event, transfer the prize to me and I will transfer to the winner.

(Group at 4 PM, I need all of you to be in aggreement on where to play. So let me know where).

At first I was pretty disappointed at this little hurtle, but once I realize we can still work it out. It was okay. I hope you feel the same way.

So, to get your password and table assignment. Do the following.

Reply to this post with option #1 or #2 and time slot 9 PM or 10 PM.

I will start assignments in order of response. That will be an easy way to put people together.

Out of the $480 prize pool (32 * $15), the winner will receive $225 + (Card Protector valued at $55), 2nd will receive $100, and 3rd and 4th will receive $50.

The card protector will be personalized with the blogger name and engraved with "HUC3 Champion".

Players, keep in mind that the breakdown below is based on your using the profits from winning round one to fund your additional rounds. You will buy-in to your first match for $11. If you win, you will get a payout of $40.

I played the first HUC and had a blast, albeit outmatched. I missed getting into the second HUC by two minutes and six seconds. Once I missed HUC2, I started realizing other things I've missed out on in my life. I've never painted a big ball with polka dots. I've never farted in a hurricane. I've never punched a police person in the mouth. I've never drank enough alcohol to be admitted to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. I've never even urinated off the Eiffel Tower. So since then, I've done every one of those things I mentioned and I'm not feeling so good these days. If I missed the HUC3, I'd be worried I would be reminded of even more fun and exciting activities that I haven't tried. It could kill me. So having the ability to play in HUC3 is saving my life.

Thanks to everyone for your interest in participating in the Heads Up Challenge #3. This is our biggest group of Competitors! It is quite an impressive group. I'm sure it will be an exciting event for all.

Now that we have 32 sign-ups, let’s get down to business.

** Watch for changes and updates denoted with the **. My awesome mentor Jordan has wisely instructed me to get less feedback and just tell you what you will do. It will be hard to please everyone as I love to do. So just work with me!

#1 - To officially be in the event, you must transfer $15 to my Poker Stars account under the screen name YoSoyVeneno. Heads-Up Challenge #3

I hereby announce that we are taking entries into the 3rd Heads-Up Challenge! As the reigning HU Goddess, Jordan has invited me to be the new Commissioner for this event!

The rules have changed, so please take a look at the new game format.

The plan is to gather a group of 16 combatants. Round 1 of the event will take place on Thursday, March 23rd at one of 4 time slots, all EST - 8:30 p.m., 9:30 p.m., or 10:30 p.m. In order to accommodate interest in other parts of the World, I am adding a 2 p.m. time slot.

Players will enter into a single elimination - 4 person Heads Up Private Sit and Go game on Poker Stars for $10 + 1. The winners will move on to the next round. These matches will be scheduled in advance as private events.

The remaining rounds will be 2 person Heads-Up matches arranged by random selection. Each match will be best of 3. The winners will advance and repeat the process, until we are down to 2. The finalists will face off heads-up in a best of 3 match.

To enter the event, all contestants will have to transfer $15 in advance for the prize pool. If we have 16 participants, out of the $240 prize pool, the winner will receive $120, 2nd will receive $80, and 3rd and 4th will receive $20.

For remaining rounds, $10 matches will take place on Poker Stars, unless the players mutually agree to play on another site and for an alternate amount.

Based on 16 participants, below is a cost breakdown:

Out on Round 1 - Maximum Cost $26
- Prize pool $15
- Match Buy-in $11

Out on Round 2 - minimum Profit $11
- Round 1 Cost $26
- Round 1 Payout $40 (net profit from round 1 = $14)
- Round 2 Match Buy-in $33 (3 * $11)
- Round 2 Payout $10 (1 win)
- 3/4 place Prize $20

Out on Round 3

2nd Place - minimum Profit $58
- Net Profit Round 2 $1 (+14 round 1, -33 buy-ins, +20 payouts)
- Round 3 Match Buy-in $33 (3 * 11)
- Round 3 Payout $10 (1 win)
- 2nd place prize $80

1st Place - minimum Profit $108
- Net Profit Round 2 $1 (+14 round 1, -33 buy-ins, +20 payouts)
- Round 3 Match Buy-in $33 (3 * 11)
- Round 3 Payout $20 (2 wins)
- 1st place prize $120

If the number of interested players reaches 32, the participants will be split into Regional Divisions (i.e. East / West). Then one additional face off will be held for the ultimate champion. The prize structure will be adjusted to accommodate an additional level. There would be no prize for Round 2. So the maximum cost for this round would change to $9. The prize for 2nd in each Division would be reduced, etc.

The standard night for each assigned match will be on Thursday nights. However, players may mutually agree to alternate nights. All matches should be scheduled 2 days in advance and be reported to the Commissioner for announcement. All matches should be held within 7 days of the assignment. The entire event should go for 3 - 4 weeks.

After a back and forth battle that last all 5 of the games and nearly 3 hours in duration, TripJax has been crowned Champion of the HU Challenge. GCox25 put up a valliant attempt and briefly had the lead at 2 games to 1, but in the end, TripJax prevailed.
